Carbon fiber brake cooling ducts in batch production at RBM Composites
02Brief

The brief.

Brake cooling ducts are an RBM Works product, made on our own account rather than to a client brief, which means the requirement was set by production rather than by a one-off fit. The part mounts to the fork legs, has to survive brake heat, road debris and the rest of what service throws at it, and has to come off the tool to the same specification in batches of ten rather than one at a time.

03Method

Method.

  1. 01Modelled in CAD against scanned fork and disc geometry, with mounting boss and bracket positions fixed at design stage.
  2. 02An FDM prototype was fit-checked on the bike before any tooling was made.
  3. 03Tooling was made here and specified against expected pull count rather than against a single run, because this is a repeat product.
  4. 04Parts are infused to a written ply schedule and trimmed to drawing. The mounting brackets are our own design, CNC machined from 6061 aluminium and anodised black, and they screw to the main duct body. Parts are finished in matte and in gloss.
04Outcome

Outcome.

Over 30 units have come off the retained tooling, to the same ply schedule every run. Repeat batches re-enter the sequence at layup, which is what holds the unit price across orders.
